Hi, I'm Donna. Founder of The Birth Shed.

About Donna

I became a mum to my son in 2022. Hypnobirthing is the reason I am not traumatised by my son's birth experience. I am evidence that hypnobirthing can work for ANY birth.

My son's birth was not what I had imagined AT ALL. My plan was a spontaneous labour and pool birth, and instead I had an induction and a Caesarean birth, because of being diagnosed with pre-eclampsia.

A new passion was sparked inside of me the moment I learned about how much of a difference hypnobirthing makes. I wanted to teach it to others, so I can spread the word. I want to prevent traumatic and negative birth experiences. Women deserve better. You deserve better.

What is hypnobirthing

More than an antenatal course. A transformational journey from fear or doubt, to a place of calm and power.

First myth breaker: hypnobirthing is not just for ‘home births with no pain relief’. It can be for that, of course, but hypnobirthing is for ALL births. Low risk or high risk pregnancy. Vaginal or Caesarean. Open to natural or pharmaceutical pain relief. Home birth, birth centre or hospital. Anything in between.

I like to describe hypnobirthing as a toolkit. It isn’t just one thing that you do. It’s a whole set of skills, knowledge and techniques that you can draw upon depending on where you are in your labour and birth journey.

You learn everything else an antenatal class covers, but what other antenatal classes don’t cover is the big part of hypnobirthing that focuses on positive mindset and removing fear.

The mind and body are connected. Our thoughts influence our body and our abilities to birth our babies. I’m here to tell you that your body knows how to birth your baby. It does. It’s our minds that gets in the way.

Common questions.

Real questions that people frequently ask about Hypnobirthing.

What exactly is hypnobirthing?

Despite the name, hypnobirthing isn't about being hypnotised or putting yourself into some trance-like state. It's a complete birth preparation method that combines evidence-based information, practical tools, breathing techniques, relaxation, and positive mindset work to help you approach birth feeling calmer, more confident, and more prepared. At its heart, hypnobirthing helps you understand what's happening in your body during labour so you can work with it, rather than against it, release fear and build trust in yourself, so you can make informed decisions and navigate birth feeling empowered, whatever path it takes.

Will I be hypnotised or lose control?

Not at all. Not like those hypnotising acts you see on the telly! It's nothing like that I can assure you. In fact, hypnobirthing is the opposite of losing control. You'll be fully aware, present, and able to make decisions throughout your birth. The "hypno" part simply refers to the deeply relaxed state we naturally enter when we're focused, calm, and absorbed in something. Relaxation is actually a skill, that you will learn how to achieve and get better at through practice. This way, you'll learn how to switch off the noise, quieten fear and anxiety, and feel more grounded and in control during pregnancy and birth.

Is hypnobirthing only for 'natural' births?

No. Hypnobirthing works for every kind of birth. Vaginal or Caesarean, low risk or high risk, home, hospital or birth centre, with or without pain relief. The techniques are about staying calm and informed whatever path your labour takes. My two births looked very different and I was able to use Hypnobirthing throughout both.

Does hypnobirthing actually work? Is it backed by science?

Yes. Hypnobirthing draws on evidence-based techniques for managing the body's stress response and pain perception in labour. Research consistently shows hypnobirthing participants report calmer births, less need for medical pain relief, and better recovery experiences. The mind and body are connected, and your thoughts genuinely influence how your body works in labour.

Is hypnobirthing for first-time parents or experienced parents?

Both. Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, hypnobirthing can help you feel more confident and prepared. Many first-time parents love having practical tools and knowledge to help them approach birth with confidence and to remove 'fear of the unknown'. And many parents who have given birth before tell me they wish they'd discovered hypnobirthing sooner, especially if previous experiences left them feeling anxious, disappointed or not how they had liked it to have gone. Every birth is different, and every parent deserves to feel informed, supported, and empowered.

Can hypnobirthing help during induction or medical interventions?

Definitely. One of the biggest misconceptions about hypnobirthing is that it's only useful if labour starts spontaneously and unfolds exactly as hoped. In reality, the breathing techniques, relaxation tools, decision-making skills, and confidence-building elements of hypnobirthing can be incredibly valuable during inductions, monitoring, assisted births, caesareans, and any unexpected twists and turns along the way. Of course, hypnobirthing can be used to increase the chances of an intervention free birth, spontaneous and physiological birth too, but should interventions be part of your story, hypnobirthing gives you the tools to support you, whatever birth looks like.

Can my partner come to the course?

Absolutely. Partners are central to the course, and are greatly encouraged to attend. Husband, wife, partner, mum, sister, friend, doula, whoever your birth partner will be is welcome (one or two). They learn how to support you in the best possible way during labour, when to step in, what to say, and how to advocate for you during each step. The course is built around the two of you working as a birth dream team! With that said, if logistically this cannot happen or if you are deciding not to have a birth partner, you can of course attend the course by yourself too!

What's the difference between hypnobirthing and NCT classes?

NCT classes are general antenatal education: what to expect, hospital tours, basic breathing. Hypnobirthing goes deeper on the mental preparation side: visualisation, language, fear release, birth partner training, and how to make calm, informed decisions in the moment. Plenty of people do both. If you're choosing one, hypnobirthing is the single course that covers full birth prep.

Can I still use pain relief if I do hypnobirthing?

Yes. Hypnobirthing isn't about avoiding pain relief. It's about giving you tools that work alongside, before, or instead of medication, so you stay in control of every decision. Some people use no pain relief, some use gas and air, some use an epidural. All of those outcomes are fine, and the techniques you've learned still apply.

When in pregnancy should I take the course?

Most people take the course between 20 and 34 weeks. That gives time to practise the techniques and feel confident before labour starts. Earlier is encouraged if you want a longer practice window, which can arguably be most effective. Later is absolutely fine though if you've only just decided. It would never be a waste to do Hypnobirthing, even if you are close to your due date! Get in touch and I will find a way to make it work.

What if birth doesn't go to plan?

This is exactly what hypnobirthing prepares you for. The techniques work whether your birth follows your plan or takes a different path. My first birth was an induction and Caesarean for pre-eclampsia, none of which was the plan. Hypnobirthing helped me to stay informed, in control of decisions, and calm even when everything changed. That's the real skill the course gives you.

What if I'm already excited about birth but still have some fears?

That's completely normal. Many parents feel excited about meeting their baby and positive about birth, while still having questions, worries, or moments of doubt. The two can absolutely exist side by side. Hypnobirthing isn't just for people who are fearful of birth. It's for anyone who wants to feel more knowledgeable, prepared, and confident as they approach it. The course will help you build on the confidence you already have, while giving you practical tools to navigate any fears or uncertainties that arise along the way.

Will I get the recordings and workbook to keep?

Yes. You keep the printed workbook, the audio relaxation tracks in Donna's own voice, and the birth plan template. The recordings are yours for future pregnancies too.

From parents who have been through it.

“I would recommend this course to anyone. I chose to do hypnobirthing as I've always had a fear of birth and I've finished the course feeling so much more confident in myself and my body, and with so much knowledge that I didn't get through NHS classes.”
